Where Are the Usual Suspects?
Leaks rarely happen in the middle of a straight pipe. They congregate where the system is most vulnerable:
- Couplings and Hoses: Worn-out seals or poorly fitted connections.
- Disconnects: O-rings that have dried out over time.
- Filters, Regulators, and Lubricators (FRLs): Improper installation or bowl seals.
- Point-of-Use Tools: Old impact wrenches or blowguns that “hiss” even when not in use.
How to Detect Leaks (Before Your Bill Does)
- The Ultrasonic Test: This is the gold standard. Ultrasonic detectors “hear” the high-frequency turbulence created by a leak, even in a noisy factory environment.
- The Soapy Water Method: Old school but effective. Spraying a mixture of soap and water on a suspected joint will produce bubbles if air is escaping.
- The Weekend Pressure Drop: If you can shut down production, pump the system to full pressure and see how long it takes to drop. If it plunges while no tools are running, you have a major systemic issue.
